The race is on to register for the 2026 Hunstanton Soap Box Derby

The countdown is on as teams are invited to sign up for the 2026 Hunstanton Soap Box Derby, returning to the town’s streets on Sunday 20 September 2026.

Entries are now open for the much-loved event, organised by the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk. Places are limited and can be booked online at west-norfolk.gov.uk/soapboxderby

New for 2026 is an additional obstacle on the course, ‘the Rattler Ramp,’ adding an extra test of speed, balance and bravery for competitors. Also, for the first time this year, spectators have the chance to vote for the best-looking kart this year known as the Concours d’Elegance.

Cllr Sue Lintern, Cabinet Member for Culture and Events at the borough council, said: “Hunstanton Soap Box Derby is always a highlight of our events calendar, bringing together creativity, friendly competition and a fantastic seaside atmosphere. Each year we see incredible effort put into the design of the karts, and I’m excited to see what teams come up with in 2026.

“The introduction of the Rattler Ramp will add an extra thrill for both racers and spectators, making the course more exciting than ever. Whether you’re taking part or cheering from the sidelines, it promises to be a brilliant day out.

“We welcomed over 50 teams last year, and it would be great to see even more people get involved this time. So gather your team, start building your kart, and make sure you secure your place early. Spectators should mark the date in their diary and arrive in good time to enjoy all the action.”

Thousands of spectators are expected to line the streets to watch racers in their fantastically fast and creatively designed hand-built karts, propelled only by a push at the start and gravity down the hill towards the sea.

The course begins at the top of Greevegate, winds through a series of twists and turns, features a jump, and finishes on Beach Terrace Road overlooking the seafront.

There are four race categories based on driver age:

  • Junior – Under 13 (10–12 year olds)
  • Junior – Under 16 (13–15 year olds)
  • Adult (16–49 years)
  • Veteran (50+)

Teams can find out more information and register now at west-norfolk.gov.uk/soapboxderby. The deadline to enter is Friday 24 July 2026. A maximum of 65 entries are available, so registration may close earlier if all spaces are filled.
