Council grant helping to enhance local mental health support in Watton

A community-led initiative that empowers adults living with mental health challenges by providing opportunities for connection, activity, and peer support has been given a boost after receiving a grant from the local district council.

Breckland Council awarded Norfolk Clubhouse with a grant of £2,470 from its Inspiring Communities Match-Funding grant scheme.

The funding will be used to support the Watton Hub, which has now expanded to offer a second weekly session. Based at Watton Christian Community Centre, the Norfolk Clubhouse Watton Hub was the first of its kind in the county. It provides a safe, inclusive space where members aged over 18 can take part in activities such as crafting, cooking, table tennis, music sessions, and games. Outside of these sessions, the group also meets informally for walks and social outings. The Watton Hub has recently joined Breckland as a Mindful Towns Partner, showcasing the support and services they offer on our website.

The new funding has already made a positive impact on members’ wellbeing. Many describe the group as a lifeline, particularly for those experiencing isolation, anxiety, or depression.

One member said: “The Watton Norfolk Clubhouse has supported me through a very tough time in my life. Having the group twice a week is fantastic for me as it begins and ends my week in a positive way. I’m feeling positive about the future.”

Another commented: “The group has been a lifeline and has been there for me when I was feeling very low and at times suicidal. It is my only social life outside of my home and being able to attend twice a week means the world to me.”

Cllr Tristan Ashby, Breckland Council’s Executive Member for Health & Communities, added: “Breckland Council is proud to support the Norfolk Clubhouse and delighted to see the positive impact the funding is having on local people’s lives. It’s clear the Watton Hub is making a real difference to its members, offering vital support, connection, and hope.

“This is exactly what our Inspiring Communities programme is all about – empowering local people and organisations to create change within their communities. Breckland remains firmly committed to investing in projects like this that promote wellbeing, inclusion, and resilience across our district.”

Inspiring Communities funding is part of the council’s wider efforts to support mental health and wellbeing through local partnerships, grassroots initiatives, and community-led projects.
