Actor Charlie Randall is literally loosening up to join a colourful panto gang heading off to see the Wizard of Oz.
Playing the Scarecrow at Sheringham Little Theatre next month will be his eighth professional pantomime role in his native Norfolk.
His first was also in the same show, but as Tin Man, and the 29-year-old from Brampton near Aylsham said it needs a totally different approach.
“The tin man was all stiff and robotic, but the scarecrow is wobbly and loose so it’s completely different and I may need to warm up before shows with some yoga.
“My friend who played the scarecrow last time has warned me involves a lot of falling over and has suggested I get some knee pads to go under my sackcloth trousers,” said Charlie.
He turned pro eight years ago and has been a regular in pantos at Sheringham and its sister theatre, St George’s at Great Yarmouth, where previous roles include being Peter Pan, Robin Hood and a prince.
“I’m really looking forward to switching from heroes to playing a silly comedy sidekick character for a change. Being someone who has no brain and looks gormless is pretty easy for me! I love scarecrow’s blissful ignorance and constant happiness, and want to be regarded as outstanding in my field,” he smiled.

Charlie knows most of the Wizard of Oz cast, and has been friends with leading lady Megan Brice, who plays Dorothy, since they were in the same drama class studying A levels at Paston College in North Walsham.

Other members of the six-string professional cast include familiar faces at the Little Theatre; show writer Nick Earnshaw as Lion, and Oliver Westlake, whose family live in Southrepps, as Glinda the good witch. Newcomers are Steven Rostance as Tin Man and Alex Mellor as the Wicked Witch of the West. Local youngsters will also join the fun as Munchkins.
The Wizard of Oz runs from December 13 to January 4. After a successful debut last year, the venue is also running an adult pantomime, Sinderella, strictly for over-18s, from January 4-12. Tickets from www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com or the box office on 01263 822347.
