The Mayor’s Design Awards winners were announced at a special ceremony held at King’s Lynn Town Hall last week.
The awards, in association with KL Magazine, had an initial 38 entries and 33 site visits over two days that were shortlisted down to 15 nominated schemes for awards in eight categories. Several new categories were included in this year’s awards including Beach Front Properties and a Green Eco Building Award, a subject close to the heart of the Mayor, Cllr Andy Bullen.

Mayor of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk, Cllr Andy Bullen, said: “The Mayor’s Design Awards are one of the highlights of being Mayor as well as being challenging. I am grateful to Hannah, Lynette and Jane in providing professional guidance, I have learnt a lot about craftmanship, good design, use of materials and sympathetic design while judging. At the heart of my decisions for awards was adoption of wildlife friendly design and features as well as how a building fits in the local surroundings. I congratulate everyone who participated, and we must not forget the trades who built these notable buildings”

Hannah Wood-Handy, Planning Control Manager at the borough council, said: “This year’s awards showcased a wide variety of schemes ranging from Industrial buildings to traditionally constructed dwellings. This shows the investment being made in architecture throughout the borough and the importance placed on good design and inspirational places to live and work.”

Lynette Fawkes, the borough council’s Principal Conservation Officer, added: “It is encouraging to see the high standard of workmanship in all of the nominated schemes which shows the pride that our building industry takes in contributing something meaningful to the built environment of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk and truly raises the bar for design in the Borough. The care and attention taken to design and deliver schemes that are appropriate in their context was inspiring to recognise.”

All this year’s entries have been scrutinised by the judging panel, which comprises The Mayor, Cllr Andy Bullen, Hannah Wood-Handy, Planning Control Manager, Lynette Fawkes, Principal Conservation Officer and Jane Forder, Assistant Conservation Officer.
