Repairs to Loddon Staithe bridge underway

Work to repair a bridge that crosses the river Chet in Loddon started this week. The contractors, appointed by South Norfolk Council, started work to repair the Loddon Staithe bridge that has been closed for ten years, due to safety concerns.

Local district Councillor, Kay Mason Billig said: “It has taken many years of hard work to get to this point but finally we will see an end to the eyesore that is the footbridge over the Chet. I look forward to seeing the new bridge opened alongside the improvements being made to the Staithe area. I couldn’t be more pleased to see this delivered for the two parishes of Loddon and Chedgrave.”

The works will include the removal of all wooden parts of the bridge and a structural survey to identify any extra works needed after the wooden fittings have been removed. When that survey and work has been completed the metal sectiond will be repaired and repainted and then the wooden fittings replaced.

South Norfolk Council expects all works to be complete by 31 March and the bridge to be open for the start of the tourist season.

Following the repairs to the bridge the Council is looking to repair the brick weave footpaths and install a BBQ cooking area on the site.
