Community support brings garden dreams in reach

A grant from the North Walsham Community Shop means local nursery children may soon be enjoying a fantastic new garden space to play and learn in.

Town Tots Nursery, run by The Benjamin Foundation since 2008, is raising funds for a brand-new sensory, food and wildlife garden at its base situated on Manor Road. With the current garden showing its age, the new garden has extra features with support for young children with additional needs very much in mind.

“We are really pleased to have been able to support this project”, said Bob Wright, Trustee of the Community Shop. “North Walsham Community Shop sells items donated by the local community and uses the funds raised to support local projects. We look forward to seeing all the improvements that will be made to give the children a much-improved outdoor space to be in.”

“Being outside in a safe, secure and exciting environment gives our children the confidence to try things, learn things and express themselves. The children we care for like to be outside – in all weathers” said Jane Medler, Town Tots Nursery Manager. “A huge thank you to the Community Shop for their donation of £5,000. It is going to make a major difference to the children’s early years development here at Town Tots”.

Town Tots supports 50 children in an average year and focuses on maximising their early years development potential and getting them ready for their first steps into primary school. All the support provided is built around what works best for the children and especially their personal interests. The new garden design has a lot of features focused on sensory processing. Planting, digging and doing things in the garden helps them develop their coordination skills, and gets them physically active. The nature areas are designed to feed their curiosity and help them learn about the natural world. It will be the ideal safe environment for learning, exploring and energetic fun.

North Walsham Community Shop is run wholly by volunteers, and they are always on the lookout for new people to help.

If you would like to be a part of something that makes a huge difference to local community life, they will be happy to welcome you aboard.
