Nelson’s Journey is delighted to have the support of the Tour de Broads cycle event again in 2025, and some inspiring young people who are taking part are already bringing much needed funds to the Norfolk charity.
As the event’s nominated charity, for the fourth year, riders can take part for free if they hit a fundraising target. As well as a host of adult riders supporting Norfolk’s childhood bereavement support charity, this year’s Tour has seen many youngsters take on the challenge.
At just 12 years old, Frank Spauls from Cringleford is riding the full 100-mile route and has already raised over £1900 to support Norfolk’s bereaved children, children like him.
“I am riding the 100 miles Tour de Broads route to raise money for Nelson’s Journey. I have been racing road and cyclocross for the past 4 years. I really enjoy riding my bike, I have never cycled 100 miles. This will be a big challenge for me,” he said.
“I am doing this ride because Nelson’s Journey helped me think about my mum and different ways to remember her. I am doing this ride to remember my mum.” He said.
Elizabeth Nelson from Horsford signed up to ride the family ride, a shorter five-mile route, and says of her six-year-old daughter: “Poppy wanted to ride Tour De Broads, or Tour De Broadies as she calls it, she turns 7 the day after the event. She loves riding her bike, and was super excited to raise money, and earn herself a medal!”
Poppy even has a purple bike, matching the charity’s signature colours!
Nine-year-old Harry Tarling from Costessey is riding the 25-mile route: “My dad lost his sister when he was young and so I’m riding for my dad, for people like him and in memory of Laura too. My grandad (Pops) is riding with me.”
The Tour de Broads has routes of 100, 75, 50 and 25 miles, as well as the accessible five-mile family ride, departing from Octagon Business Park in Little Plumstead and the longest route taking riders through Reedham, Filby, Mundesley, Coltishall and more along the way.

The tour takes place on Sunday, 17th August, with a donation from each general entry also benefitting Nelson’s Journey thanks to organisers TPR Events.
Neil Turner from TPR Events, an award winning not-for-profit organisation based in Norfolk, said “We are delighted to be working with Nelson’s Journey. Our events are designed to engage, inspire and enable riders of all ages and abilities to get active, feel great and get more out of life and we love partnering with like-minded charities like Nelson’s Journey whose team are always so enthusiastic, positive and encouraging – they are an inspiration!”
