The groundbreaking event for the new visitor centre and café at Broadland Country Park has been held marking the official start of this exciting new project.
The first sod was cut by Broadland District Council Cabinet member, Martin Booth. he said: “The new visitor centre and café will be a wonderful addition to our country park and will provide significant improvements to toilet facilities, parking, and accessibility. We all know the health benefits of spending time in the fresh air and these changes are designed to increase the country park’s appeal to residents as an outdoor destination where they can have fun together.”

The council’s ongoing management at Broadland Country Park has already resulted in significant biodiversity improvements, from restoring heathland to reintroducing the Silver Studded Blue Butterfly and seeing the return of nightjars. This project reflects the council’s continued dedication to protecting the park’s natural beauty while creating a sustainable, welcoming space for everyone to enjoy.
The Council is working closely with local architects and specialist contractors to ensure the project is as eco-friendly as possible. The Council is also committed to achieving operational net-zero CO2e emissions from the cafe and visitor centre by integrating renewable energy systems such as heat pumps and solar panels, along with the use of sustainable materials.
The work being carried out will make Broadland Country Park more accessible and enjoyable for everyone, including residents with mobility needs. The improvements will also mean visitors will have the opportunity to stay longer and explore everything the park has to offer.
Broadland District Council Leader, Sue Holland said: “Broadland Country Park is a special place and as custodians it’s our duty to protect this wonderful asset for future generations. While the work is being carried out, great care will be taken to preserve the surrounding landscape, minimising excavation near tree roots and we will make sure important trees are protected.”
The new project has been equally funded by the Greater Norwich Growth Board and Business Rates and S106 contributions.
Broadland Country Park also offers a variety of family-friendly events throughout the year. More information is available on the Council’s website: www.southnorfolkandbroadland.gov.uk
