South Norfolk communities are embracing the Mindful Towns and Villages initiative, with Tasburgh, Tivetshall, and Starston now joining the growing movement to support mental health and wellbeing.
Cllr Graham Minshull, pictured with Judith Varley – a passionate member of the community – and Jackie Trenavin, a local health and wellness coach, celebrated the progress. He said:
“It’s inspiring to see villages like Tasburgh, Tivetshall, and Starston come together to make mental health and wellbeing a priority. These communities show that by working together, we can create safe, supportive spaces where everyone feels valued and heard.”
The scheme, already active in several towns and villages, trains and supports Wellbeing Champions who encourage open conversations about mental health and signpost residents to support services.
Cllr Minshull added:
“With so many people facing mental health challenges, creating a supportive community has never been more important. The Mindful Towns initiative gives local volunteers the tools to make a real difference. Our Wellbeing Champions will be at the heart of this effort, offering immediate support and helping to improve wellbeing across our villages.”
South Norfolk Council delivers the training in partnership with NHS Norfolk and Waveney Talking Therapies, creating compassionate spaces where anyone can talk, feel heard, and find help when they need it most.
Members of Tasburgh who completed the training included representatives from the village hall and social club, Tasburgh carers group, county and parish council members, and keen residents. It’s a close-knit community, with those involved eager to support their neighbours and create a safe, welcoming environment.
In Tivetshall, representatives from the village hall attended the training. The hall also hosts the popular coffee morning, Tivetshall Tea Junction, which gives many residents the chance to socialise and enjoy each other’s company.
Starston saw members of the parish council and the local youth group take part, strengthening intergenerational connections and ensuring wellbeing support reaches all corners of the village.
