Sheringham RNLI hosted their annual Lifeboat Day on Sunday, 11th August, drawing record crowds to the promenade. This year’s event was particularly special as it marked the first time that Sheringham’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat was joined by the Cromer lifeboats (Tamar and D-Class) and the Wells Shannon-class lifeboat for a joint demonstration. The timing of the event, coinciding with high tide, allowed the lifeboats to come extremely close to the shore, offering spectators an unprecedented view of these impressive vessels.
The day was packed with activities, including a coordinated demonstration by the RNLI Lifeguards and HM Coastguard, with Sheringham lifeboat. Visitors also enjoyed a teddy tombola, a variety of refreshments, and a stall selling painted pebbles created by long-time RNLI supporter, Elias Fenn. Elias, who has been painting and selling his unique designs throughout the year, was able to raise £328 for the RNLI with his sales on Lifeboat Day.
Chris Taylor, Sheringham Lifeboat Helmsman, praised Elias’s efforts, saying, “Elias is an incredible young man. This is now the third year he has sold his beautiful painted pebbles to raise money for the RNLI. We are all very grateful and inspired by his dedication and artistic talent.”
The winners of the Sheringham RNLI poetry competition were awarded prizes and recitals given of the winning poems from each category.
The day continued with a special performance by The Sheringham Shantymen, attended by a large and enthusiastic crowd, and concluded with the traditional annual lifeboat service.
Reflecting on the day’s success, Brian Farrow, Sheringham RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, said, “We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all who made today possible. I have never seen such numbers of people on the promenade for our Lifeboat Day. A combination of perfect weather & tidal conditions, and the support of our flank stations at Wells and Cromer ensured everyone got to see the capabilities of our crews, the boats and the launching equipment.”
Significant funds were raised through the various stalls and collections which will go towards supporting the continued efforts of the RNLI in keeping the waters around the UK safe.
