A community-driven initiative led by Broadland District and South Norfolk Councils has helped families across both districts save thousands of pounds this summer. Following its success, the scheme will continue in South Norfolk Council’s Leisure Centres. Broadland District Council has also announced plans to expand the initiative in 2026, offering even more opportunities for local families.
The School Uniform Swap Shops, hosted at leisure centres and community events throughout the summer, received an overwhelming response from residents, who came together to donate, swap and support the project in large numbers.
South Norfolk Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Keith Kiddie, said:“This initiative has made a real difference to families across our communities and we’re grateful to everyone who has donated, swapped and supported the project.”
Broadland District Council’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Excellence, Cllr Jan Davis added:“It’s been fantastic to see so many families benefit from the swap shops, not just financially, but also through the sense of community it’s created.”
In South Norfolk, swap shops at Wymondham Leisure Centre, Long Stratton Leisure Centre, and Diss Swim Centre rescued over 450 school uniform items, saving families an estimated £14,314.
In Broadland, swap shops at Acle Recreation Centre and pop-ups at Family Hubs Teddy Bear Picnics saved over 400 items, with a total value of £12,744.
That’s more than 850 items given a second life, reducing waste, easing financial pressures for families, and strengthening community ties.
The uniform swap rails will remain in place at all three South Norfolk leisure centres, with Broadland District council planning for further pop ups to return next year, allowing families to donate and swap items all year round.
Cllr Kiddie added:“A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this possible. Keeping the rails up in South Norfolk means this support can continue throughout the year and we hope even more families will get involved.”
Keep an eye on both Councils’ Facebook pages for more opportunities to get involved in the scheme.
