Moving Cartoons

My name is Rob Middleton and I’m a Norwich-based cartoonist and illustrator. I create personalised cartoons under the name Moving Cartoons.

I draw anything that moves, whether that’s on four wheels or four legs. I draw a lot of classic cars, usually managing to work a dog or other animal into the scene as well. I’m also fond of drawing people’s pets, and exploring the wonderful world of wildlife in cartoon form.

Cartoons also move the emotions, which makes them ideal gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions.

I offer a range of options — prints of existing cartoons, personalised cartoons where I take an existing design and modify it (for example, adding your dad behind the wheel of a Jaguar E-Type), or fully bespoke commissions drawn specifically for you.

I’ve done work for various classic car clubs and organisations, including a commission for the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club to promote their stand at the NEC Classic Car Show. I also enjoy drawing Norfolk-themed cartoons — including a Lotus Esprit undergoing submarine trials on the Norfolk Broads (a nod to its famous appearance in The Spy Who Loved Me), and a Booming Bittern — one of Norfolk’s most iconic and elusive wildlife residents.

I’ve also had tremendous fun running cartooning workshops at various local venues, including Cinema City in Norwich.

I love living in Norwich. I love the feel of history, and also the creative buzz about the place. I’m often based at Norfolk Chambers co-working space, so I can easily meet up in person in the city.

Cartoons capture what photos can miss. It might be the in-joke, a personal Easter egg, or a special moment that wasn’t recorded by the camera.

A cartoon shows a moment, a relationship, a personality that a photograph simply records. A well-placed in-joke or surprise element creates a reaction that a framed photo rarely does — people laugh, they share it, they display it proudly and show it to others. And unlike a photograph, a cartoon captures personality, not just appearance — a cartoon of someone’s dog captures that dog’s character, not just what they look like.
