Profile
Future Radio is Norwich’s dedicated community radio station broadcasting on 107.8FM in Greater Norwich, on DAB in Norwich, Kings Lynn and Cambridge, online at www.futureradio.co.uk, and via smart speaker. We reach a potential audience of almost half a million residents, who tune in for a mix of music, talk and local features.
As part of the charity Future Projects, which exists to tackle poverty, deprivation and disadvantage in Norfolk, Future Radio is more than just a radio station. We’re here to empower all communities within the area and to provide a platform for everyone to have a voice.
The station runs thanks to over 70 volunteers, supported by a small team of staff. Our volunteers present and produce radio shows, research stories and features, provide technical support and administration, and bring diverse voices and perspectives to the airwaves. Many volunteers leverage their experience at Future Radio to build careers in the media—some notable alumni include Greg James (BBC Radio 1), Thordis Fridriksson (BBC Radio Cambridgeshire) and 2019’s Community Radio Male Presenter of the Year, Sam Day.
Future Radio offers a wide range of programming: mainstream shows like Breakfast withFuture Radio, Norwich Today and Drive, as well as specialist shows in genres such as drum & bass, soul, dance music, Americana and a wide range of music from the 1960s to the present day. The station also caters to specific communities with shows such as a Polish Show, Older and Bolder, which serves the 55+ community, Pride shows and programmes focussed on the local business scene.
The station also partners with many organisations in the area to create radio-based projects.Examples include a show about the local theatre scene, with Norwich Theatre; documentaries about homelessness with Shelter Norfolk and the anniversary of 100 years of the Mile Cross Housing Estate with The Common Lot; and Money Matters, a regular show to improve personal finance education, in association with the Aviva Foundation. Future Radio also acts as media partner to key city events such as Heritage Open Days and Norfolk and Norwich Festival.
Local music is extremely important to Future Radio. We support local artists through our monthly Local Playlist, where bands within the NR postcode area can submit their music to be considered to be played regularly on air. Our annual local music event FutureFest also provides a platform for local artists to perform live.
Based on Woodcock Road in Norwich, Future Radio operates from two onair studios and has extensive outside broadcast facilities. It frequently broadcasts live from public venues such as Norwich Market and at events like Norwich Pride & Norwich City Council’s Festive Lights Switch-on, providing interactive content and real-time audience engagement. The station is able to broadcast from any business or organisation’s premises, providing a promotional platform for many local groups.
Local businesses and organisations can advertise or sponsor content, benefiting from the station’s wide reach. Importantly, all revenue directly supports Future Projects’ charitable activities, aimed at helping disadvantaged children and adults across Norwich.
Recognised for high-quality programming and community impact, Future Radio remains one of the UK’s longest running community radio stations. It was the first in the country to gain an extended Ofcom licence and continues to build on that legacy. The station has also won the Broadcast and Media Award at the Norfolk Arts Awards twice in recent years.
Future Radio invites anyone aged 18+ to volunteer—whether to present, produce, assist with events, tech, journalism or admin tasks. It also welcomes business partnerships, sponsor-led features, outside broadcast requests, and community collaborations.
