Nelson’s Journey invites Norfolk to host a Purple Picnic

Nelson’s Journey, Norfolk’s childhood bereavement support charity, wants people in the county to make the most of summer by hosting a Purple Picnic.

Purple Picnic week takes place from the 14th-20th July and already schools and education settings across the county have signed up to hold their picnic in the last full week before the summer holidays.

Wymondham High Academy host their event in Purple Picnic week, and Deputy Head of Year 10 Karen Staff said the school is a keen supporter of Nelson’s Journey: “Being able to fund raise for a charity which provides imperative support to children & young people to enable them to be the best versions of themselves following a significant death is a privilege. We are proud to be recognised as a School Friend of Nelson’s Journey”

The Purple Picnic is not just a campaign for schools; families, businesses and community groups are encouraged to host their own picnics while helping to raise funds to support Norfolk’s bereaved children, and they can host it whenever they like.

Greenacres Colney Park will be hosting their picnic in August and Maureen Coulson, Senior Marketing Manager at the park says: “Coming together at GreenAcres Colney Park for the Purple Picnic is a beautiful way to remember someone special – to spend time in nature, enjoy good food and music, and help raise money for Nelson’s Journey.

“We support the Purple Picnic because Nelson’s Journey does incredible work supporting children and young people through their grief, providing vital care and comfort when it’s needed most.”

Simon Wright, Chief Executive of Nelson’s Journey, said: “Year after year, local communities in Norfolk have organised Purple Picnics for Nelson’s Journey’s work, and we’re excited to see what comes from this summer. Schools, community groups, and individuals will be taking part by sharing food, raising money in support of bereaved children, and in some cases talking about their memories of someone special who died.”

“We can only provide support for bereaved children and young people through the support of the community, and a Purple Picnic is an easy and fun way for people to get involved. With a summer of good weather ahead, it’s the perfect time to be planning picnics with friends, colleagues and family!”

The Purple Picnic was founded in 2015, a creation of Nelson’s Journey’s panel of Young Volunteers. Since then, it has raised over £50,000 for the charity.
