This winter marks a huge milestone for Nelson’s Journey. Norfolk’s child bereavement charity has announced that it has now supported 10,000 children and young people through their bereavement after a significant person in their life has died.
Maisie Close, funding and marketing officer at Nelson’s Journey, said: “To mark this milestone, Nelson’s Journey has invited the voices to be heard of those that we’ve supported during the lifetime of the charity. Our 10,000 Journeys campaign will see a number of films and blogs being released over the coming weeks, and we’re launching these for people to view these across Nelson’s Journey’s social media channels and website.”
Amelia, who was supported by Nelson’s Journey, has just graduated University and has become a volunteer at the charity:
“When I was 3, I lost my dad. At that age I couldn’t understand what had happened and as I got older I began to really struggle with the reality of being a bereaved kid.
“I met with Nelson’s Journey when I was 7 and went on two separate activity weekends at Hilltop. I look back on these weekends with joy. They were a big part of my journey and helped me come to terms with something I didn’t know how to talk about with anyone else. Being surrounded by other bereaved children meant that I was able to talk to people my own age who were struggling just as much as I was”.
“Nelson’s Journey didn’t heal everything. The years following were still tough at times, but through the support workers and the other kids, I learned that my pain, sadness, anger and even relief, were all valid, and that is something I carry with me to this day.
“As an adult I am now volunteering for Nelson’s Journey myself and pursuing a career in child welfare. Without Nelson’s Journey, it’s safe to say I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
