Major improvements to the leisure and sports facilities at Southtown Common Recreation Ground in Great Yarmouth are nearing completion.
With funding from Great Yarmouth Borough Council, Sport England and contributions from developers, £63,000 has been spent on revamping the Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) at the recreation ground close to the Harfrey’s Roundabout.
The popular MUGA has had new tarmac surfacing laid, improved drainage, new fencing and backboards, new line markings and goal ends for football and basketball. The new line markings are intended to improve accessibility and make the facilities inclusive for all.
Councillor Graham Plant, Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s portfolio holder for Operational Property and Asset Management, said: ‘’These improvements are a fantastic new addition for families in the area and will really enhance the park and make it more welcoming for everyone.
‘’As part of the commissioning the work on the MUGA we focused on improvements that were accessible and inclusive so everyone can enjoy the new facilities.
‘’We are delighted that, ahead of final completion, walking football groups, cricketers and basketball players have already been enjoying the improvements.’’
As well as £25,000 of council finance to help pay for the revamp, the council was awarded £15,000 from the Sport England Movement Fund and £23,000 came from a Section 106 developers’ contribution. The work has been carried out by Play Innovation Ltd.
