Local Champion To Row Across Atlantic Ocean For Charity

Johnny Bakewell will row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean this December to mark The
Benjamin Foundation’s 30th anniversary.

Johnny (60), a paramedic from Norwich, intends to raise money for The Benjamin Foundation by rowing across the Atlantic Ocean this December. With experience of completing a range of high-endurance challenges, such as the Transatlantic Way Race and Land’s End to John O’Groats, this may be his toughest challenge yet.

Accompanied by a band of like-minded adventurers, the challenge starts in Tenerife on December 1st with the team rowing 12 hours a day until they reach Falmouth Harbour, Antigua, around 35-40 days later.

Reflecting on what he expects to be a physically and psychologically tough experience, Johnny says: “’As challenges go, this is on an altogether different level. Finding out how I will react to the lack of sleep, rough seas and hard graft will be an education I relish getting to grips with. I can’t wait to get going”.

Money raised will be going towards supporting local youth charity The Benjamin Foundation, which supports over 3,000 children, young people and families every year through a range of services such as housing provision, emotional wellbeing support and youth work projects.

“We are incredibly grateful and excited about the support from Johnny” Kirsty Pitcher, CEO at The Benjamin Foundation said. “With this year being our 30th Anniversary, we see Johnny’s 3,000 mile adventure as a great opportunity to raise important awareness of the needs of young people supported by our charity and encourage others to step up in support of local causes.”

With 100% of funds raised going directly to The Benjamin Foundation, people who donate to his challenge will make a positive impact on supporting local young people, helping to create stronger, empowered individuals who finally feel supported to overcome challenges in their own lives.
