The Soap Box Derby races back onto the streets of Hunstanton on 22 September 2024. From 22 March 2024 teams can enter online to take part in the event organised by the borough council.
Places are limited and can be booked at west-norfolk.gov.uk/hunstantonevents
Cllr Simon Ring, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing at the borough council, said: “We want to finish the summer with a bang and there’s nothing better than thousands of people lining the streets to watch people in their marvellous homemade karts race down the street, propelled only by a push and the hill down from the town towards the sea.
“The soapbox derby is returning to its traditional spot at the end of the summer season in Hunstanton, as it has for many years since the first event took place in 1953. I look forward to seeing town businesses support and benefit from the carnival atmosphere and large crowd it brings to Hunstanton.
“We had over 40 entrants last year and I would love to increase that number this year so please get designing and building your exhilarating racing karts, choose some wonderful outfits, and enter to race online through the borough council website. Spectators need to put Sunday 22 September 2024 in their diary too and please remember to get there early to a get good spot to watch all the crazy racing.”
The course starts high up on Greevegate, has a few twists and turns, karts will hop over a ramp, and end up on Beach Terrace Road overlooking the sea.
There are four categories that can be entered, by driver age:
Junior 10-13yrs
Junior 13-15yrs
Adult 16-49 yrs
Veteran 50+
Teams can find out more information and register to race from Friday 22 March 2024 at west-norfolk.gov.uk/hunstantonevents. Deadline to enter is 4 September 2024 although there is a limit of 60 entries in total so may close sooner if we receive the maximum number of teams.
