Profile
St. George’s Theatre is Great Yarmouth’s only all year-round theatre, housed in one of the town’s most iconic buildings, a stunningly converted Grade I listed chapel, built in 1715 and situated in the historic King Street district and cultural quarter.
In 2006, the Theatre was declared ‘At Risk’ by English Heritage and in 2009 architects were appointed to restore and refurbish the building at a cost of £4 million. Work included a separate pavilion which houses a café.
The Theatre re-opened in 2012 and is recognised as one of the finest examples of baroque architecture outside London.
The Theatre presents a variety of homegrown and national productions and provides a range of shows, with a strong music programme of local and popular tribute bands.
It produces a professional Pantomime each year and is renowned for telling a traditional tale with a modern twist! Norfolk and Suffolk Music Hub live stream the Pantomime from St. George’s into schools every year to offer free access to pupils across the Country.
The Theatre is home to a thriving youth theatre and community musical theatre group.
As a community venue, The Theatre offers a variety of volunteering and work-place opportunities where residents can meet new people, build confidence, and learn key transferable skills. The theatre’s community cafe and outdoor area provide a flexible space where residents and local groups can take part in activities. It is also an increasingly important venue to other arts organisations and partners in the Town, who use the venue to reach out to their users and to host workshops and events.
As part of a volunteering project, St. George’s produced a community show called ‘Juke Box Thrive’ which celebrated the musical history of the town, with songs from the famous bands like who appeared in Great Yarmouth, such as The Beatles. This intergenerational production involved people with ages ranging from 10 to 82 years, in a variety of different aspects, including set building, marketing, promotion, technical tasks, such as lighting and sound, Stage Management and directing. From this production a local young person went onto direct a summer musical show, another young person was engaged to support St. George’s social media activity and another has become an assistant to the community workshop leader.
St. George’s Theatre is part of the annual ‘National Open Heritage Day’ and works regularly with Norfolk and Norwich Festival, Out There Arts and Norfolk and Suffolk Music Hub.
