Community turns out in force for Hellesdon recycling event

Hundreds of items were collected for recycling at Broadland District Council’s Small Electrical and Textile Recycling Event, held on Friday 10 October 2025 at Hellesdon Community Centre.

Local residents brought along 348 small electrical items and 87kg of textiles, helping to prevent needless waste and promote more sustainable habits across the district.

Cllr Jan Davis, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Excellence, said: “It was great to see so many people coming along to support this event. It really demonstrated how small actions, like recycling an old toaster or a bag of clothes, can add up to make a big difference. Thank you to everyone who took part.”

The event provided a convenient way for residents to responsibly recycle unwanted items such as tangled chargers, broken hairdryers, worn-out clothes, and faded curtains.

All electricals collected were sent to a specialist contractor, where they are dismantled and recycled into new products. Around 75% of materials in old electricals can be reused in items like playground equipment, life-saving medical tools and new electronics.

Textiles were sorted for reuse or recycling, with unusable fabrics shredded into fibres for new materials.
