Over the Christmas break of 2024, the Tia’s Treasures Team found a new way to have some festive family fun – by hiding tiny ducks around the house! What began as a simple game quickly became a cherished tradition, with everyone joining in and laughter filling the rooms as the ducks were discovered.
The inspiration behind this playful idea came from a more personal place. Toby, the youngest member of the Tia’s Treasures Team, had been going through a difficult time at school during the transition from Year 2 to Year 3. To help ease his anxiety, Toby started having lunch in Mrs Redhead, the principal’s office It was there that he discovered her “Lucky Duck” – a handmade glass duck from Whitby, known as a Whitby Lucky Duck.
Toby loved the idea of the Lucky Duck and would come home eager to talk about it. Soon, both Toby and his brother Tommy had an idea: what if they hid ducks for others to find, as part of Tia’s Treasures’ Random Acts of Kindness?
So that’s exactly what we did.
Inspired by Mrs Redhead’s Lucky Duck we decided to launch our own version: TT Lucky Ducks – named after Tommy and Toby, and of course, Tia’s Treasures who proudly sponsor the initiative.
Together, we designed special tags, sourced a variety of ducks, and began our very own TT Lucky Ducks adventure. The ducks started to “fly the nest,” bringing smiles to the faces of those lucky enough to find them. For Tommy and Toby, it’s become a joyful part of their daily walk to and from school – a walk that’s over a mile each way!
We later discovered that there’s a global duck-hiding trend – from Cruise Ducks found on ships, to Duck Duck Jeeps hidden on vehicles.
