Profile
World Poetry Day, Friday March 21st 2025 will see the launch of a CD of the remarkable work of the late care-experienced poet Paul Yusuf McCormack. ‘No Colours for My Coat ‘offers a glimpse into his life in care and the challenges he faced to become an extraordinary man, a father, husband, foster carer, trainer, poet, artist and campaigner.
Taken from his book, ‘Marks of An Unwanted Rainbow’ published after his death by Kirwin Maclean Associates Ltd, the poems are read by Sheringham based actor, playwright and director Steve Banks. The introduction in Paul’s own words are read by John Tams, generally best known as Rifleman Hagman in the Sharpe TV series. Tams has five decades in the theatre, film, radio, television and as a musician including his work as music master of ‘Warhorse’. The music on the CD was written and played by Richard Digance, a well known established soundtrack composer, musician and performer, and writer who assisted with this production out of respect for such wonderful poetry. ‘No Colours for My Coat’ is a touching reminder of the life journey of a child brought up in public care, of survival and hope.
The launch event will offer an evening of poetry and music and will feature Gerry Colvin. A firm favourite of Cromer’s Folk on the Pier festival for many years, Gerry delights audiences with his brilliant songwriting and performances that can to quote Phil Beer of Show of Hands ‘make us laugh and cry in the same breath’. Paul’s words, which were recorded for the CD at Poppyland Radio studios in Northrepps, will be brought to life by Steve Banks, who brings depth and passion to the poetry. They will be supported by Norfolk based poet and musician Kevan Taplin.
The event will take place at the Belfry Arts Centre, Overstrand.
Friday March 21st at 8.00 pm.
