In a heartwarming tribute to 200 years of lifesaving service by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), 19 lifeboat teddies have been lovingly crafted by the Norfolk Knitters and the Sheringham Museum Textile Team. This unique initiative highlights the enormous generosity, crafting skills, and mounds of yarn contributed by these dedicated crafters, resulting in a woolly mountain of small yet valiant new lifeboat crew recruits.
Currently, these adorable lifeboat teddies are learning seamanship aboard the Sheringham RNLI Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat ‘The Oddfellows’.
But, in the week following Lifeboat Day, they are set to embark on an exciting new adventure. These charming teddies will be hiding throughout the town of Sheringham, waiting to surprise and delight residents and visitors alike.
“We are thrilled to unveil these lifeboat teddies as a celebration of the RNLI’s 200 years of incredible volunteer service,” said Wendy Austin, Sheringham Lifeboat Station Volunteer Shop Manager, “It’s a playful yet meaningful way to honour the bravery and dedication of the RNLI volunteers who have saved countless lives at sea.”
Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore the town during this special week and keep an eye out for these hidden teddies. If you spot one, simply shout “bear ahoy” and take a moment to reflect on the two centuries of lifesaving heroism by the RNLI volunteers.
This initiative is a testament to the wonderful knitting community, whose efforts have brought this charming project to life. “We extend our mighty thanks to the Norfolk Knitters and Sheringham Museum Textile Team for their incredible work and creativity,” added Brian Farrow, Sheringham RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager.
