Wood'n Boats, featuring new work by celebrated maritime painter James Dodds and sculptor Roger Hardy is on now at The Yare Gallery, Great Yarmouth.
We are thrilled to have curated the largest collection of James' paintings in this exhibition with over 40 paintings and 40 linocut prints depicting boats of all sizes and types from Yarmouth luggers to crab boats and Greek keikis to Viking long boats - with one defining factor - wood. James' ability as a storyteller is shown in his wonderful linocuts depicting a gulls eye view of coastal towns and shipyards from across the UK. We also have some more political work created by James since the covid lockdowns, so keep an eye out for that gallery.
Amongst the collection of paintings we have some wonderful sculptures from Suffolk based sculptor Roger Hardy, who sees human forms in ancient pieces of wood reclaimed from the sea in his native east Suffolk and brings them to life in his studio.
To go alongside the work by these two artists, we have two ceramicists presenting work in our gallery shop - Serena Jones and Keri Lowe. You will also find cards, books and prints by James Dodds in here.
We are fortunate to be able to show you a film of James painting one of the paintings in the show - Gypsy - a Yarmouth Lugger - a massive painting, 13 feet in length. Also, two short films of a Sheringham fisherman in his crab boat, and the restoration of a crab boat by Rescue Wooden Boats from Stiffkey up on the north Norfolk Coast.
You will also find a small collection of photos from artist Natalie Knowles of her fisherman father Glyn working on his crab boat in the 1970s.
So plenty to see in our exhibition, Wood'n Boats, at The Yare gallery - in our 17th century merchants house overlooking the river on South Quay in Great Yarmouth NR30 2RG.
The exhibition is on until 6th October and we are open Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 4pm (last entry 3.30pm). The gallery is free to enter (donations most welcome) and we have parking beside us.
