The port town of King's Lynn in Norfolk is preparing for the world's first active reality adventure story that will see thousands taking part across the town and at various locations in west Norfolk.

The first thrilling episode is set to launch on 25 November at 4pm at our Christmas lights switch-on and will engage adventure-seekers in an extraordinary and wide-ranging interactive hunt for clues.

This is an ambitious, daring new project from Cambridge-based experimental arts organisation, Collusion, delivering the first ever 'active reality' arts-tech project. Active Reality is a way of describing a project that brings multiple elements together in an episodic manner - in this case live performance, augmented reality and large-scale projection. These are then laid over a specific location to create a reality-bending adventure.

Described by organisers as multi-layered, episodic and unfolding across space and time, this major new arts and tech project has been created by a cross-disciplinary team of over 30 people. These include international, national and local award-winning artists, writers, playwrights, musicians, technologists and illustrators, all collaborating to create something on a huge scale and never-before-seen.

The story writer is James McDermott, an upcoming writer from Norfolk, who has been commissioned by the Royal Court Theatre. James has co-written the story with nationally recognised producer Marcus Romer. Creatives include US artists, Matmos, who have worked on two Bjork albums; experimental band Carter Tutti, ex members of Throbbing Gristle; nationally recognised illustrator, Joe Magee (NY Times, Observer, Guardian); RTS winner and composer of several BAFTA winning tv films and programmes, Sandy Nuttgens; and Liwaa Yazji, a playwright from Syria whose work has been produced by the Royal Court.

Speaking ahead of the event, Collusion Director, Rachel Drury said: "This is our most ambitious project to date and we are enormously excited to bring REVEAL to life in King's Lynn. REVEAL has been months in the making and brings together a diverse range of creative talent to develop a novel way of story-telling whereby the audience take part in the story as it evolves and unfolds. There are clues. There is intrigue. There are discoveries to be made.

"Our aim is to showcase how new technology shapes our world in a fun, interactive, connected way, ensuring that the experience is welcoming for everyone. We also want to show how these technologies can change the nature of art, presenting new creative approaches that go beyond what people may have experienced before."

Simon Poulter, who is producing and directing the project, said: "There is considerable enthusiasm for VR and AR at the moment, but REVEAL brings a live experience and quest to your mobile phone - one that can be enjoyed with friends and family in the amazing heritage town of King's Lynn."

There will be five live theatre sequences each Sunday from 25 November at 4pm, taking place across the heritage projection sites in King's Lynn up until 23 December. During this time, the public are invited to follow the story and use their mobile phones to discover clues and other content each day, including geo-locative and augmented reality experiences. To crack REVEAL players must find all 24 codes and unscramble them to make a sentence. They can use social media or any online tools to help but be warned - it is hard. Code breaker leaflets with instructions on how to play will be available online and from the REVEAL pop up shop at 10 Norfolk Street, King's Lynn. The first 20 people to solve the code will go in the Hall of Fame at revealKL.com.

Nearly 300 children and young people from across the area will contribute to the launch and live shows with digital handheld light devices they have made and coded in workshops for the project, held in early November. A 'how to' YouTube video is available at revealkl.com/engagement allowing anyone to join in the live shows by creating their own digital lighting device.

REVEAL, which is a joint project between arts organisation Collusion and the Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk, launches at 4pm on Sunday 25 November - as part of the switching on of the Christmas lights in the Tuesday Market Place - and runs until 4 January 2019.

Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds, Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk cabinet member for Culture, Heritage and Health, said: "We're delighted to be working with Collusion to bring another exciting project to King's Lynn & West Norfolk this Christmas. Our town's light projections are rightly renowned, so we're always looking for innovative ways to develop them.

"REVEAL will combine our beautiful historic buildings with live theatre, projection, and augmented reality to create something unique and brand new. King's Lynn & West Norfolk has a wealth of creative talent and REVEAL is making great use of that; I'm very pleased that artists and creators who live right here in the borough are closely involved. REVEAL will develop skills that we can draw on for future projects, as well as creating something of national significance."

REVEAL is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Amy Vaughan, Director, Cambridge, Arts Council England, said: "Collusion has been doing some really exciting work in King's Lynn and across the region, collaborating with artists and communities to push the boundaries of digital creativity and innovation. REVEAL is a fantastic example of their work and I'm really pleased that King's Lynn will be the playground for this exciting active reality project."
