All Things Norfolk guide to Cromer

Every month we’ll be featuring a much loved part of Norfolk which owes its continued existence to the independent business and organisations which are devoted to encouraging and serving customers. This month, and with the recent sad loss of one of our most famous local residents, we are focusing on Cromer and will bring you news of local events and what’s on offer in the area. When you think of Cromer do your thoughts turn to piers, crabs, Poppyland, lighthouses and lifeboats? Obviously the answer’s yes, but there’s so much more to this delightful Victorian seaside town which was recently adopted as the home of one of Britain’s most popular and sadly recently departed thespians, Sir John Hurt.

New Seafront Decorative Lighting on Marine Parade

As one of the Greater Yarmouth Tourism and Business Improvement Area Ltd’s (GYTABIA) first projects to come to fruition, Marine Parade, Great Yarmouth’s Golden Mile is now aglow once again in the evening with 42 decorative sails in position in lamp posts all along the seafront.

Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner, near Sheringham, have again been named amongst the best open spaces in the UK, winning the right to fly the prestigious Green Flag for 2015/16. It is the eleventh year in a row that Holt Country Park, which, like the other two winners, is run by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), has earned a Green Flag for being welcoming, safe, clean and well-managed.
Flying the flag for North Norfolk’s seaside resorts this year are Sheringham, Cromer, Mundesley and Sea Palling. All four are continuing the standard of excellence that was recognised with the awards of Blue Flag status last year. North Norfolk District Council is celebrating an extra award this year; alongside East Runton beach which has been awarded a Seaside Award for the second year running, Wells-next-the-Sea beach has won the coveted award for the first time. The Seaside Award is in recognition of high standards of beach management.

Discover ‘Gorey Stories on a Wicked Walk’ on a special Whitsun Holiday Heritage Walk in Great Yarmouth on Wednesday, May 27. The walk starts at 2pm from the Fishermen’s Hospital Gates in the Market Place and lasts up to two hours. Places must be booked in advance on 01493 846346, or at Great Yarmouth Tourist Information Centre, Marine Parade. Prices: £6.50 adults, £4 children (7-16), under 7’s free, price includes refreshments in the Star Hotel. Twenty maximum on the walk, so book early (10 minimum for guided walk to take place).
Norfolk Tourist Attractions’ Association (NTAA) launched the 2015 Great Days Out in Norfolk & Suffolk booklet at Pensthorpe Natural Park, North Norfolk, on Tuesday, March 3. Norfolk and Suffolk attractions are investing more than £7.7 million in new facilities and events to improve the visitor experience. Pensthorpe Natural Park is developing the new family Hootz House, a £1.25 million investment, opening summer 2015 bringing WildRootz’s adventure play the natural way indoors, with a magical natural world where children can scramble, scamper, climb and slide and have hours of fun.

Memento Mori – Norfolk World War I Memorials' Trail

East Anglian charity, Art Alive in Churches has produced Memento Mori World War I Memorials in Norfolk, a trail leaflet, which focuses on mainly rural memorials in 17 churches across the county. Churches have been selected for the stories that the memorials tell. Norfolk County Council and Norfolk Community Foundation Commemorating WWI have helped fund the project.

Aha! There are some fantastic new faces among the ranks of our ‘city of Norwich tourist guides’. The group of 19 new guides, who have been trained to know everything about Norwich’s unique characters from the fictional Alan Partridge to the mercantile Robert Toppes and the medieval Lady Julian, are set to be presented with their badges by Lord Mayor of Norwich, Councillor Judith Lubbock in a special celebration ceremony at City Hall next week.

The Wind Energy Museum - The Morse Collection is a fascinating collection of wind powered exhibits in the picturesque village of Repps with Bastwick.
