Bradfield Cricket Club opens new clubhouse with ‘Big Society’ help

Bradfield Cricket Club had a special guest last Saturday (August 18 2018) before their league match against Horsford; North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Leader, Councillor John Lee, was on hand to present the Club with a plaque celebrating the Council’s £15,000 grant from its Big Society Fund. This was the first serious fixture at the ground since Bradfield opened their refurbished clubhouse on August 4; part of a £120,000 project to secure cricket at one of the best grounds in Norfolk. The new clubhouse, on the edge of the pitch which Bradfield have played on since 1845 now boasts new changing facilities, toilets, kitchen, bar and social area, which together will provide better facilities, especially for children’s cricket at the Club. Great Yarmouth Borough Council agrees grants to help improve shopfronts

Great Yarmouth Borough Council has agreed grants totalling £52,000 to improve town centre frontages over the last 18 months – and businesses and social enterprises are urged to apply soon if they wish to secure some of the remaining funds. Under the Town Centre Shopfront Improvement Scheme, eligible applicants can ask for grants of up to £3,000 to help fund shopfront renovation, decoration, new signage and/or replacement of historic features, in Great Yarmouth town centre. Through five funding rounds over the last 18 months, the council has approved 23 grant applications totalling £52,360, including £19,840 during the last funding round alone, helping to accelerate and unlock investment in frontages. Planning application submitted for Community Sports Hub

Three indoor tennis courts will be at the centre of a key sports development proposed by North Norfolk District Council, bringing sport and leisure benefits to all ages, all year round. Plans for a £3.2m Community Sports Hub in Cromer have been submitted as the country enjoys the first week of Wimbledon fortnight. The project is being developed in conjunction with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and Cromer Academy, whose students will directly benefit from the new facilities. The facility will provide better access to high quality tennis and benefit all ages, with a wider plan to double participation for young people in North Norfolk and beyond.

NNDC is helping Colby Primary School to go for eco gold

Colby Primary School are active participants in the Eco-Schools project, a global programme which is part of Keep Britain Tidy. The school has an Eco Council made up of ten pupils of different ages who campaign within the school to make other pupils aware of environmental issues that affect themselves, their school and their local area. The school is consistently striving to improve its eco credentials further. In order to improve on one of their objectives, clearing litter, the school approached North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) to ask for some new litter pickers as they aspire to keep the school grounds and surrounding area tidy and free of litter. NNDC donated the junior litter pickers to the Eco Council at the school on 28 June.

New beach litter boards will help marine and coastal environment

The number of #2minutebeachclean boards along the North Norfolk coast has more than doubled. Five new boards, which encourage people to spend 2 (or more) minutes picking up marine litter and plastic pollution, are being introduced at Walcott, Cromer West, East Runton, Sheringham East and Sheringham West. They were delivered in the last few days. The boards are sponsored by North Norfolk District Council and each has a custodian who looks after it day to day. The custodians of the new boards are the Kingfisher Café in Walcott, the Reef Stop Café in Cromer, NCI Coastwatch at East Runton, The Mo in Sheringham and the RNLI in Sheringham.

Joyce proves you are never too old to keep fit

Joyce Irvine proved you are never too old to keep fit as she celebrated her 90th birthday with friends at a seated exercise class held in Sheringham Library. Joyce was surprised by her friends and fellow exercise class members who organised a celebration with chocolate cake, music and party hats, although she nearly uncovered the surprise when she arrived at the Library earlier than expected to return some books! As a founder member of the class, Joyce has been enjoying the benefits of seated exercise since the class was set up by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) in 2015 as part of its Sports Hubs and Clubs programme. The 45-minute session is designed for those who like to keep fit and enjoy a gentle workout while sitting down, and it…

North Norfolk’s Cromer Pier – the show goes on!

A new 10 year management contract to run Cromer Pier, one of the nation’s most iconic seaside structures, has been awarded by Pier owners, North Norfolk District Council, to Openwide. The celebrated and award winning Grade II Listed Pier which has been described as ‘fabulously English’ has become a national treasure and a ‘gem of the Norfolk coast’ since it was built in 1901. Playing host to the world’s only remaining full season End of the Pier Show, the 495 ft long Pier has claimed its fair share of awards through the years, kick-started many entertainment careers and provided a stunning backdrop to numerous films and productions.

Princess Anne attends Gresham’s Senior School Speech Day

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal flew in to Gresham’s by helicopter at the weekend to officially open Gresham’s new music school, the Britten Building and to hand out prizes to pupils at the annual Speech Day celebration. Her Royal Highness was the Guest of Honour for the Senior School Speech Day in her new role as The Prime Warden of The Fishmonger’s Company. As part of that role, she will be Gresham’s Ex Officio Governor. Princess Anne was met by an excited group of Pre-Prep and Prep pupils who were eagerly waving Union Jack flags as she made her way to the School’s Memorial Chapel to enjoy a service for Upper Sixth leavers and their parents.
Thousands of people enjoyed the best of what South Norfolk has to offer at South Norfolk Council’s biggest show of the year on Sunday.The Council’s HQ in Long Stratton was packed with people enjoying the fantastic entertainment, children’s activities and local food and craft stalls. This is the eighth year that the Council has promoted its services through a spectacular day of entertainment for all the family.

South Norfolk Council's Swim School is turbo-charged.

Keen swimmer, Noah Harris was in a spin to find out that he had won South Norfolk Council’s competition to name the Swim School Turtle.Four year old Noah, from Cringleford, thought the turtle should be named Turbo, and the judges all agreed.Noah and his mum Rebecca collected his prize of six months Swim School membership from Councillor Yvonne Bendle, who said. “Congratulations to Noah for coming up with such a splendid name for our turtle. Swim School is a great success, with over a thousand members at our leisure centres in Diss and Wymondham"
