Maids Head Runners Support Break

Three of the Maids Head's team, Jonathan Brasnett, Andrew Shorthose and Rose Taylor ran the City of Norwich Half Marathon on 8 April and raised £188 in sponsorship for our charity of the year, Break. The sponsorship has been matched by the hotel, making a grand total of £376.

Sarah Bunn, Break's Fundraising Event Manager, joined us for the hotel's Vision and Values Employee Awards event on 23 April and presented certificates of appreciation and VIP supporter's badges to the running team.

Paul Dickson, the hotel's resident tour guide, was also presented with a VIP supporter's badge for raising £147 for Break, comprising donations given at the end of his Shardlake's Norwich tours, during English Tourism Week.

The hotel was also pleased to provide the venue for Break's fundraising Prom Nation Pick a Dress event on April 11.

Break makes life better for vulnerable young people in East Anglia. The charity believes that every child and young person needs a home where they feel safe and loved, so they can grow in confidence and look to the future with hope. Break's vision is to ensure children, young people and families reach their full potential and shape their own futures in a safe and creative environment.

  • Maids Head Hotel Sous Chef in Norfolk Chef of the Year Final

    Maids Head Hotel Sous Chef, Elliott Winson, is a finalist in the Norfolk Food and Drink Awards Chef of the Year 2019 competition.

    Eight chefs will compete in the live cook off, at City College Norwich, on the morning of Tuesday, July 9. This will be followed by a technical skills challenge in the afternoon.

    To enter the competition chefs had to submit a main course, with a budget of no more than £4.50 a portion, featuring local, sustainable and seasonal Norfolk produce.

    Elliott’s main course features Gressingham Duck: confit duck leg with potato rosti, smoked carrot purée, heritage carrots, pickled elderflower and duck jus split with elderflower oil. 

  • Maids Head Hotel Head Chef Semi-Finalist in National Chef of the Year Competition

    Marcin ‘Magic’ Pomierny (age 34), Head Chef at the Maids Head Hotel in Norwich and Chef of the Year in the EDP Norfolk Food and Drink Awards 2016, is a semi-finalist in the 2019 Craft Guild of Chefs National Chef of the Year competition. This is the second year running that Magic has reached the semi-final.

    Forty chefs, split into four semi-final heats, will be competing on June 11 for a place in the final. The winner of each heat, plus the six best runners up, go through to the final, which is at The Restaurant Show on Tuesday, October 1.

    Magic’s semi-final heat is at Sheffield College. The brief for the chefs is to produce a creative three-course summer lunch menu.

  • Maids Head Hotel Employee Awards Day

    Tuesday, April 23 was the Maids Head Hotel's quarterly Vision and Values staff awards day. The hotel's vision is to be known as the finest for hospitality in Norfolk and staff receive awards for being nominated by fellow team members, for work that has supported achieving that vision.

    Simon Dean, Junior Sous Chef, was named Employee of the Quarter, awarded to the member of staff who receives the most nominations. Simon has been at the Maids Head for six months. He is a graduate in Culinary Arts Management from University College Birmingham, a four-year course, which included a work placement in the United States. Simon moved from Cambridgeshire to Norwich for his new role; his third job since leaving university. 

    He won the award for brightening the mood of the kitchen, for constantly being cheerful and friendly, for being a team player and very approachable and always being willing to help staff and answer any question.

  • Milly J Shoes Delivers Easter Shoe to the Maids Head Hotel

    Emily Jupp of Milly J Shoes has delivered her special 'Easter' Shoe to the Maids Head Hotel. The shoe will be on display in hotel reception throughout the Easter period.

    Emily is a shoe artist and is creating a series of shoes, linked to key events in the Norwich and Norfolk calendar, for display at the hotel. She crafts her handmade shoes and clips in her shop and studio in Tombland, just across the road from the Maids Head.

    Winner of the EDP Bride Awards Innovation Award 2018 and Footwear Designer of the Year 2015, Emily has launched a campaign to get people to bring their unwanted shoes to her shop, so they can be upcycled into one of her colourful creations. 

    Guests enjoying hen party and birthday party afternoon teas at the Maids Head, can also book Emily for a fun workshop to design an create their own pair of shoe clips, which they take home in a presentation box.

  • Celebrate English Tourism Week at the Maids Head Hotel, Norwich

    Celebrate English Tourism Week from Saturday, March 30 to Sunday, April 7 at the historic Maids Head Hotel in Norwich, winner of Best Independent Hotel and the Investing in the Future award at the Norfolk and Suffolk Tourism Awards 2019.

    A classic English Afternoon Tea will be on offer comprising egg and cress, salmon, cheese and homemade tomato chutney sandwiches; homemade sausage roll, scotch egg (originated from Fortnum and Mason in 1738); Cherry Bakewell, Victoria Sandwich and traditional fruit cake; Raspberry Eton Mess and cheese and fruit scones with clotted cream and jam.

    The hotel has a new partnership with shoe artist, Emily Jupp of Milly J Shoes in Tombland. Emily is producing special shoes linked to key events in the Norwich and Norfolk calendar, which will be displayed in Maids Head reception. Her English Country Garden shoe, marking English Tourism Week, is launching the new partnership.
