Princess Anne attends Gresham’s Senior School Speech Day

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal flew in to Gresham’s by helicopter at the weekend to officially open Gresham’s new music school, the Britten Building and to hand out prizes to pupils at the annual Speech Day celebration.

Her Royal Highness was the Guest of Honour for the Senior School Speech Day in her new role as The Prime Warden of The Fishmonger’s Company.  As part of that role, she will be Gresham’s Ex Officio Governor.

Princess Anne was met by an excited group of Pre-Prep and Prep pupils who were eagerly waving Union Jack flags as she made her way to the School’s Memorial Chapel to enjoy a service for Upper Sixth leavers and their parents.

To commemorate the opening of the Britten Building, Princess Anne planted a tree outside and after a tour of the building and time spent chatting to donors and school governors, she unveiled a plaque in the building’s foyer.

Speeches took place in the School’s beautiful Theatre in the Woods, attended by pupils, parents, governors and staff.  Head of School, Zara Raslan and Deputy Head of School, George Jefford both gave speeches and closed them with a wonderful musical performance.  Gresham’s Chairman of Governors, Andrew Martin Smith announced that Cromer-born and former Gresham’s pupil, Sir James Dyson, would become a governor representing the Old Greshamian Club.

Douglas Robb, Gresham’s Headmaster said: “We feel deeply honoured that HRH The Princess Royal has agreed to become a Governor of Gresham's in her capacity as Prime Warden of The Fishmongers' Company.  She follows in the footsteps of her father and Gresham’s Patron, The Duke of Edinburgh who has been a Governor previously.

“Gresham's is also very excited to welcome Sir James Dyson OM as a Governor from September. The School is in great spirits after a lovely speech day and the opening of new facilities. We are lucky enough to enjoy growing school numbers and are well set for the future.”

Princess Anne handed out prizes to 80 pupils and took the time to speak to each one in turn.  After her departure by helicopter, guests enjoyed lunch and many stayed to watch a ‘Staff vs Leavers’ cricket match.

  • Holt Country Park, Pretty Corner Woods and Sadler’s Woods recognised amongst best UK open spaces

Sadler’s Wood, near North Walsham, has re-joined Holt Country Park and Pretty Corner Woods in being recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world.

Holt Country Park holds its position as a green space for the 14th year running and was joined by Pretty Corner Woods in 2013. Sadler’s Wood first received the accolade in 2012 and despite just missing out last year it has now re-claimed its place thanks to the hard work of our Countryside Team.

The parks are among a record-breaking 1,970 UK parks and green spaces and 131 in thirteen other countries around the world that will today receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

  • Capture the beauty of Holt Country Park

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) launched its Holt Country Park photography competition in September 2018 and the response so far has been excellent. The winners so far have won prizes from a variety of local businesses as well as a place in the Holt Country Park 2020 calendar.

The Green Flag award winning park is situated on the edge of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is host to many wonderfully visual subjects from orchids in the summer to snowdrops in the winter, many varieties of butterflies who share their airspace with dragonflies and damselflies as well as goldcrests and greater spotted woodpeckers.

The park has a visitor centre with toilets, a car park with disabled parking bays (available at £2 per day) and way-marked routes suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

  • Holt Country Park among UK's best open spaces

This is the thirteenth year in a row that Holt Country Park has been able to fly the Green Flag, which denotes a welcoming, safe, clean and well-managed site.

The award demands year-on-year improvement for the status to be retained.

  • Opening concert held at new music school

Gresham’s School’s Senior and Prep School children, together with its quartet-in-residence, the Albion Quartet, delighted the first audience to attend a concert at the Britten Building, the school’s new music school and sixth form centre.

Benefactors, acousticians, surveyors, engineers and architects came together to celebrate their creation where they enjoyed a full programme of music featuring the school’s choir ‘Schola Cantorum’, musicians from the Prep and Senior School and the Albion Quartet in the new Fishmongers Recital Hall. The Fishmongers Recital Hall features a splendid Steinway piano, hand selected from the home of Steinway & Sons in Hamburg.

  • Holt : Fine Georgian Town

Holt is unlike any other Norfolk town. If you are strolling through its busy streets on any weekend in the year, the first thing you will notice is that outside the big banks, it is hard to find a national chain’s shopfront in Holt, and the town is all the better for it.

There is no WH Smith, no JD Wetherspoons, no Next, no Marks and Spencer – and even the supermarket (Budgens) has now been bought up by Bakers and Larners of Holt which has affectionately been dubbed the Harrods of Norfolk. Indeed you are more likely to see a member of the Royal family, an ex Prime-minister or A list celebrity strolling around this fine Georgian Town than someone walking around with a bag promoting a national chain.
