A new wildflower meadow is set to be planted at Diana Way park in Caister as part of planned improvements to the area.

During Love Parks Week, as part of its Levelling Up funding, the government announced a £9m- scheme to create new or significantly refurbished green spaces in urban areas that need them most, with £85,000 available per project.

The Caister work will also be paid for via income received from housing developers for community projects, known as Section 106 money.

The meadow will be a vibrant mix of wildflowers creating a stunning display of colours and textures. The planting of the wildflowers will be carried out using sustainable and environmentally friendly methods to ensure that the meadow will thrive and support local wildlife for years to come.

Works to prepare the ground for the planting – which is due to begin next week - include cutting back existing vegetation and clearing the site to prevent it from rotting down and enriching the soil. Once any vegetation has been completely removed, the soil can be cultivated to a depth of about 10cms. After several weeks, the seeds can then be planted.

The wildflower meadow is part of wider work at the park, which includes new paths to ensure better accessibility for users, improvements to the play area and signage and the planting of more trees.

The meadow will provide an opportunity for people to take a leisurely meander through the wildflowers, connect with nature and aims to inspire residents to take an active role in preserving the natural environment.

Simon Best, Head of Inward Investment at Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said: “The wildflower meadow will be a beautiful addition to thecommunity and promote biodiversity, which is vital for a healthy ecosystem. We hope that the meadow will be enjoyed by both residents and visitors alike and encourage everyone to take the time to appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us."
