Norwich concert raises £6,000 for Cancer Research UK

A concert rescheduled three times due to the impact of COVID-19 finally went ahead recently, raising £6,000 for Cancer Research UK.

The all-women orchestra and choir of Norfolk performed music from popular films and shows, including the Sound of Music, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Phantom of the Opera.

Staged at the spacious venue of St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich, over 350 people attended to finally enjoy the afternoon of live music.

The concert was the brainchild of music teacher Ann Smith, who first brought together Norfolk’s most talented female musicians in 2018. She said: “Cancer is something that touches so many people’s lives. Cancer Research UK, the world’s leading independent cancer charity, was the most appropriate cause to support.”

Geraldine Green, composer of Ballade For An Entablature, travelled from Bolton to hear the premier performance of her work. “It was all well worth the long wait,” she said. “Fabulous event on all levels.”

Among others in attendance was the Lord Mayor of Norwich, Cllr Dr Kevin Maguire. He tweeted: “Absolutely wonderful afternoon attending a concert by a Norfolk-based all women Orchestra and Choir in aid of Cancer Research UK. It was delightful to see the Children's Choir who, having charmed us with their singing, marched out waving flags during music from Les Mis.”

Deborah Adams, relationship manager for Cancer Research UK, said: “We couldn’t be more pleased at the outcome of this fundraising event, after such a long time coming! A big thanks to the hard-working organisers and everyone else involved, whether singing or attending, for helping us bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.”
