Chris Crowther spent 42 years of his working life flying aeroplanes and helicopters in various parts of the world, mainly West Africa as Chief Pilot of a helicopter operation, and where his first books were written. After hanging up his flying helmet, he skippered passenger boats on the Norfolk Broads where he now lives with his wife Sue, rowing and sailing while plotting his next “Jack Fellows” adventure.
THE “JACK FELLOWS” SERIES OF MURDER AND MYSTERY
Dastardly deeds are not something you automatically associate with Norfolk, but local author Chris Crowther has gone even further and used the tranquil magic of Broadland as the setting for his series of whodunits.
The sleuth in these stories is Jack Fellows, a navigation ranger with the Broads Authority, who spends his days patrolling the waterways, assisting boaters and enforcing the river by-laws. Like many rangers, he has a police background, in his case as a Detective Superintendant with Scotland Yard, and a copper’s instinct that looks beyond the carefree boating to a rather more sinister world of strange happenings and questionable deaths. For Jack, much to the dismay of his long-suffering wife, Audrey, this is just grist to the mill of his investigative skills. And so, amongst marsh and reedbed, old boatyards, dilapidated windpumps and unique wildlife, wrongdoers are pursued, though with many a twist en route, to a solution that will challenge every armchair detective until the very last page.
WATERPROOF – A brutal murder, but the police soon have their man . . . or have they?
STILL WATERS – A girl inherits a boatyard from her grandfather . . . except she’s never heard of either before in her life.
THE WATER FROLIC – A joint endeavour might just reconcile two very different communities, until . . .
WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE – How do you solve a crime that had to be impossible in the first place?
MURKY WATERS – The simple contents of a long-lost handbag lead down a trail that becomes ever murkier.
DEAD IN THE WATER – Could a despised new landowner really be the victim of a time-slip?
WATERSHED - steam and mystery with Jack Fellows on the Broads
As well as Chris's series of Jack Fellows books Chris has just written PURSUIT, a flying thriller set in WW1. 1926 – The Bronx - New York, a much-loved priest brutally murdered, a vagrant arrested, and struggling lawyer Mark Kingsley roped in to his defence. Except the accused turns out to be his old best friend and fellow-flyer from WW1 days in the LFC, but who higher authority now seem strangely intent on framing for the crime. Embarking on his own quest for the truth, Kingsley finds not only romance and constant recollection of those wartime years, but also the mounting realization that they hold dark secrets and a connection to one of America’s first and most enduring aviation mysteries.

Dodo and Dinosaur is a small Norfolk-based design studio run by mother and daughter team Jill Michelle Smith and Jennifer Watson. Their exciting new book 'An A-Z of Extraordinary Extinct Creatures’ is designed to inspire young readers’ curiosity in natural history through a collection of twenty-six weird and wonderful beasts.
Written in an accessible rhyming style and packed with fun and engaging facts, the book is designed for both supported and independent reading. Aimed at children of primary school age, the amusing verses and vibrant illustrations invite little explorers into a prehistoric world which is just waiting to be discovered.
“The children in our year group absolutely adored 'An A-Z of Extraordinary Extinct Creatures'! The beautiful illustrations captured their imagination and they were intrigued to find out about many interesting creatures that they had not learnt about before in school. The unique names given to each creature, to correspond with the letter of the alphabet, was a lovely touch that got the children chatting about which animal their name matched with! Many of them were so enthused that they went home to do some extra research about some of the new creatures they had discovered, and were keen to share these with the rest of the class. It was a perfect core text for our 'Dinosaurs' unit and made a lovely change to the usual non-fiction books we use. I would highly recommend it!” Miss Herbert, Curriculum Lead and Assistant Head of School James Wolfe Primary with Centre for the Deaf, Greenwich
Combining Jennifer’s background in graphic design and experience working in the conservation and heritage sector, with artist and illustrator Jill’s unique style, the pair started the journey to bring these extraordinary extinct creatures to life. The species featured in the book include a few which children may already be familiar with, such as woolly mammoth and dodo, but most are more obscure, yet certainly no less interesting, making the book’s illustrations all the more fun to discover.
The idea behind ‘An A-Z of Extraordinary Extinct Creatures’ came from both Jill and Jennifer’s love of art and nature. With a young son already fascinated by dinosaurs and all things prehistoric, Jennifer wanted to encourage young children to discover a new book about more unusual species, while helping to develop a true love of natural history. With this vision in mind, Jill was keen to create artwork that was both child-friendly and a reasonably accurate interpretation of the creatures’ natural forms.
Caring for our planet and its incredible species is at the heart of Dodo and Dinosaur’s ethos and researching these extinct creatures (some only extinct as a result of human interference), has emphasised the importance of sustainability. ‘An A-Z of Extraordinary Extinct Creatures’ is printed on 100% sustainably sourced, carbon balanced paper in association with World Land Trust, helping to protect critically threatened rainforests.
In addition to their book, Jill and Jennifer have also been busy creating a beautiful new range of sustainable products for children, featuring their A-Z designs. Perfect for children’s bedrooms, playrooms and school bags, their range of Extraordinary Extinct© products are made from organic and eco-friendly materials.
